General information.

The scientific name of pumpkins is Cucurbita pepo. We've included closely related giant pumpkins (Cucurbita maximima) and winter squashes (Cucurbita moschata) as they often serve interchangeably in cooking and decoration. .Pumpkins like a long (60 to 130 days), warm growing climate, ideally 68 F to 90 F (20 C to 32 C); but a hot wet climate makes them susceptible to fungus. Categories of pumpkins

  • Giant pumpkins are the massive pumpkins you see loaded on trucks to display. Typical contest winners weigh over 1,000 lbs (450 kg)
  • Jack O Lantern pumpkins are those developed for size and a tall round shape, but their grainy texture and lack of flavor makes them less suitable for cooking. They'll do, but a pie or eating pumpkin
  • Pie pumpkins, eating pumpkins and winter squashes come in a huge variety of shapes, colors, sizes, textures and flavors.

Fairytale fairytale pumpkin

decor, eating 100 - 110 days. Medium to large, dense (heavy for their size) with a flattened, deeply ridged shape; deep tan or orangish at maturity. Inside, the flesh is sweet, dense, deep orange and can be used for any pumpkin or winter squash recipe. It pairs well with strong flavors, too, like curries or soups as the flesh holds up well. The plant produces strong vines that resist powdery mildew. Fairytale are typically 2-18" across and about 15 lbs.

Trojan Large jack-o-lantern, round, taller than wide, medium orange, with nice-sized peduncle. Vigorous vines showed low levels of powdery mildew.
